Vikram Chandra’s epic novel of Bombay/Mumbai, SACRED GAMES, has just hit the
shelves iu another translation into a major European language (this blog has
earlier carried notes on the German and Spanish versions). Now it is French –
a particulary important occasion, since it marks the first time any of Chandra’s
works has been translated into the language of the onetime rulers of
Pondicherry. The translation, in one volume, is (re)titled LE SEIGNEUR DE BOMBAY, or THE LORD OF BOMBAY.

There is a glossary at the end, obviously based on the English-language glossary
available on Vikram Chandra’s website. There is no Translator’s note, though a very
brief editorial note explicates the Bombay/Mumbai naming issue.
