Some of you may have been missing the Call for Papers site at the University of Pennsylvania and its mailing list (service was suspended some time ago). The CfP site is now back in action at:

and details of upcoming conferences, journal issues etc in the areas of literature and general humanities can be submitted on-line (I believe submissions have to be in English). The mailing list, however, has NOT been revived, so those interested will have to remember to visit the site.

This is a general directory of upcoming conferences, not restricted to humanities but clearly sectionalised. Categories include Arts & Humanities, Social Science and Education. Conference details can be submitted online via the site.: it is not compulsory to enter details in English.

LINDA RONSTADT DIRECTS MARIACHI FESTIVAL / LINDA RONSTADT DIRIGE FESTIVAL DE MARIACHI

 

Linda Ronstadt (born Tucson, Arizona, 1946) may be best known as a 1970s rock icon, but her musical career has in reality been exceptionally diverse, with multi-genre recordings in fields including jazz, country and cajun, as well as, to date, three Spanish-language albums of old-time Mexican numbers by the likes of Agustín Lara. Her grandfather was a mining engineer of German-Mexican origin who also played in a mariachi band. Linda’s three ‘Mexican’ albums are ‘Canciones de Mi Padre’, ‘Más Canciones’ and ‘Frenesí’. The first, released in 1987, became (at the time) the biggest-selling ‘album not sung in English’ ever in the history of the US charts.

 

Now, this coming Saturday 27 September 2008, Linda will perform alongside artists like Lila Downs at the Mexican Heritage Plaza’s 17th Annual International Mariachi and Latin Music Festival, in San José, California. Specially showcased will be Linda’s and the festival’s homage to the late Mexican singer Lola Beltrán. Ronstadt is the festival’s consulting artistic and educational director, and at the moment mariachi is her main musical concern.

La cantante estadounidense Linda Ronstadt (nacida en Tucson, Arizona en 1946) se conoce mejor si duda como icono de música rock de los años 1970s, pero en realidad su carrera musical ha sido excepcionalmente diversa, abracando una multitud de géneros que van del jazz y el country hasta el cajun, y, muy especialmente, la música mexicana, pues es la autora de, hasta la fecha, tres álbumes, cantados en lengua castellana, de ‘viejas’ canciones mexicanas de compositores como Agustín Lara. Su abuelo, ingeniero de minas, era de origen mexicano-alemana y tocaba en un conjunto de mariachi.  Los tres álbumes ‘mexicanos’ de Linda son ‘Canciones de Mi Padre’, ‘Más Canciones’ y ‘Frenesí’. El primero, lanzado en 1987, alcanzó a ser en su momento el más vendido álbum ‘no anglófono’ de la historia de las listas de éxitos estadounidenses.

 

Ahora, este sábado el 27 de septiembre de 2008, Linda actuará al lado de artistas como Lila Downs en el ’17th Annual International Mariachi and Latin Music Festival’ de la ‘Mexican Heritage Plaza’, en San José (California). Se brindará un lugar de honor, de parte del festival y de la propia Linda, a la fallecida cantante mexicana Lola Beltrán. Ronstadt es directora y consejera para los aspectos artísticos y educacionales del festival, y en este momento su mayor preocupación musical es, precisamente, el mariachi.

BOOKER PRIZE SHORTLIST 08 – INCLUDES 2 INDIAN NOVELS – AMITAV GHOSH, ‘SEA OF POPPIES” AND ARAVIND ADIGA, “THE WHITE TIGER”

9 September 2008 saw the announcement of the shortlist for the Man Booker Prize 2008. The list of six includes two Indian novels – "SEA OF POPPIES" by AMITAV GHOSH (cf. this blog, entry for 2 August 2008) and the debut novel by ARAVIND ADIGA, "THE WHITE TIGER". Meanwhile Salman Rushdie’s "The Enchantress of Florence" did NOT make it from the longlist (cf. also 2 August entry).

To mark the occasion of Ghosh’s debut appearance on the Booker shortlist, on 5 October 2008:

THE HINDU published a reflective and detailed piece, "Histories of belonging and becoming"by Priyamvada Gopal, offering a full examination of Ghosh’s career so far. The author calls Ghosh’s work "a reclamation of all that is valuable, possible and indispensable in our heterogeneous culture", and stresses how he has reinvented himself with every book:

"Rather than settle into a predictable house style with a much-used box of
tricks to hand, Ghosh has chosen to set new literary challenges for himself,
constantly transforming his work over the years".

I would recommend this article both to those familiar with and to
those new to his remarkable work.
