Indian Journal of World Literature and Culture, 5/6 (2010-11): focus on José Saramago

Now out is Vol. 5/6 (Jul 10 – Jan 11) of IJOWLAC, the Indian Journal of World Literature and Culture (ISSN 2229-7251), edited from Bubhaneswar (Orissa) by Dr Subhendu Mund.

There is a special focus on the late José Saramago, and also a tribute (by Dr Mund himself) to another figure who left us in 2010, the Kolkata publisher and poet P. Lal.

The texts on Saramago are by Miriam Ringel (on his novel Manual de Pintura e Caligrafia  / Manual of Painting and Calligraphy), Bracha El Hassid-Gruner (on the various cover-designs of his A Caverna / The Cave) and Christopher Rollason (reviewing his last novel, Caim / Cain).

There  are also articles on Chinua Achebe (Anthills of the Savannah – Debaleena Dutta), Shauna Singh Baldwin (What the Body Remembers – Pooja Sharma), actresses in the 19th-century Bengali theatre (Sarvani Gooptu), R.K. Narayan (The Guide – Binod Mishra) and Parsi identity in the fiction of Rohinton Mistry (Hardeep Singh Mann), poems by Stephanos Stephanides, a report by Christopher Rollason on the 2010 Frankfurt Book Fair (special  guest: Argentina), and more.

Dr Mund may be contacted at: subhendumund@gmail.com

My own contributions are on pages 137-139 (Saramago) and 143-145 (Frankfurt). Texts of both are on this blog – Saramago,  9 January 2010;  Frankfurt, 16 October 2010.

The Saramago review is, however, in an earlier version here on this blog; the longer version that appeared in IJOWLAC is at: http://yatrarollason.info/files/SaramagoCaim.pdf
