"Empire, Sense of Place and Cultures in Contact – George Orwell’s ‘Burmese Days’ and Amitav Ghosh’s ‘The Glass Palace’" – as far as I know, the first study to offer a sustained comparison of these two Burma-themed novels.

 

It was given as a guest paper to a postgraduate seminar at the University of Manchester, England, in July 2008.

EXTRACT:

"Criticism does not, to date, appear to have done more than note briefly the significant literary, historical and cultural issues that are generated by the intertextual relationship between George Orwell’s Burmese Days (1934) and Amitav Ghosh’s The Glass Palace (2000), two novels which have in common the rather obvious point that both deal with Burma and the impact of empire on that country. Burma (today officially Myanmar) was annexed piecemeal by the British across three wars between 1824 and 1885, when Mandalay was captured and Thibaw, the last king, was exiled (cf. Courtauld 34-40). The country was directly incorporated into British India until 1937, when it was placed under separate administration, was occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945, and won independence in 1948, a year after India and Pakistan. This history finds significant literary reflection in the "Burmese" novels of Orwell and Ghosh. The two texts manifest clear intertextual links and parallels, while, furthermore, the work of both writers exhibits other more general similarities of an arresting nature. To juxtapose their respective fictional and discursive universes – one colonial (or pre-independence), the other postcolonial – may shed significant light on empire and its aftermath."

19 January 2009 marks the 200th aniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). 2009 will see a whole host of events and publications in different countries devoted to the life and work of one of the USA’s greatest and most celebrated writers. I summarise 21 (and add – see entry on this blog for 7 July 2009 – that the bicentennial year also sees the publication on-line of my own doctoral thesis on Poe from 1987 – see image above):

1) This Saturday, 17 January, already saw, in the Tres Rosas Amarillas bookshop in Madrid, the event UNA NOCHE CON POE (A NIGHT WITH POE), billed as a ‘nocturnal and terrorific reading’ of tales by Poe, accompanied by a fancy-dress spectacle:

Present were some of the writers aho participated in the new annotated edition of Poe’s complete tales in Spanish, “Cuentos completos: Edición comentada” (2008), published by Páginas de Espuma (Madrid):

7) The 2009:1 issue (published in February) of NEXUS (publication of AEDEAN – Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos) is dedicated to Poe and includes articles by Scott Peeples, Santiago Rodríguez Guerrero-Strachan and Margarita Rigal and Beatriz Montero. 8) On 19 February 2009, Poe’s spirit will return once more to Mexico, to preside over an event (lecture/round table ) in Pachuca (Hidalgo state), held in the Ricardo Garibay Library and organised by the Consejo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes de Hidalgo.

13) On 30 July 2009, the City Museum of Guadalajara (Mexico) hosted a reading by the Mexican actor Vicente Herrera of Poe’s poem EL CUERVO (THE RAVEN) and the (very Poesque) short story ‘Casa tomada’, by Julio Cortázar. and 18 poems, all united by the fact of being dedicated to real or imaginary women.

Both the translations and the highly imaginative illustrations are the work of Mircala himself.

is my translation into English of BONFILIO, a short story by Héctor Domingo (Mexico). This story was originally published in Spanish in Héctor’s volume BITÁCORAS DE SOLEDAD (2008) (earlier reviewed on this blog by myself, in Spanish – entry for 29 June 2008).

Copyright resides with Héctor for the original and with me for the translation.

  EXTRACT:

"7 September

  “Why are you taking it if it’s not for you?”, the sweeper asked me that evening in the little square. The sun was already hiding itself and the wind had blown towards me a leaf of paper, old-fashioned in appearance and delicately handwritten.

  “Is it yours?”, I asked him in surprise. He came up to me to take it away from me suavely, then raised his arm to the sky and let it float away after the first gust that rose up with sufficient strength.

  “That letter’s not for you – or me either”, he said as if apologetically. Then he withdrew to carry on with his labours, while the piece of paper flew on, down the street and towards the ocean.

  I went after the man with my uncertainties and he responded by pointing towards an old house situated uphill. There at the balustrade was a woman in a gala dress (…)"
